Shnat Hachshara is our 10 month long development programme in Israel. We take our youngest year of Madrichim to study, volunteer and simply live in the land of Israel. The details of the programme change each year as multiple options are open to our participants but certain elements are constants.
Machon
We encourage attendance at the Machon Educational programme in Jerusalem. The institute has run a phenomenal youth leadership course since before the state, most notable on its roster were David Ben Gurion and Martin Buber who taught there. Currently it attracts the highest calibre of educators in the Jewish world. The course is tailored to pre-university students and leaders of youth movements, it is learning without teaching, through experience rather than out of a book.
Options
As well as Machon we offer a two month option period where our participants can choose from working on the ambulances with MDA, to participating in a 2 month course run by the IDF’s Education Department or volunteering in one of Israel’s major cities.
Northern Component
For years, Hanoar Hatzioni has had a strong connection with a collection of moshavim in the Galil called Ma’ale Yosef so for our final section we offer the opportunity to live in a communal house in one of these moshavim and work with the community for 3 months, teaching English, running youth activities and just living the life of the people of the region. We strive to connect our Shnat participants with the Israeli’s that came on their Tour aged 16 or attended summer camps previously.
For those madrichim who do not wish to, or are unable to go to Israel for a year we provide a structured range of opportunities to get involved in Hanoar Hatzioni or the wider Jewish Community, this includes volunteering in schools here, leading one of our dedicated youth groups or editing Hanoar Hatzioni’s magazine Makara.

We will hold pre-shnat preparation days for the group during the year before departure in which we will go over the forms and help them fill them in.
Further details regarding the application process and hachshara programme will be dealt with by the movement administrator and Menahel Tochniot MASA.
